Civic Values Essay Contest
The Bill of Rights Institute, a nonprofit educational organization in Washington, DC, is sponsoring the “Being an American Essay Contest.” This contest challenges high school students to reflect on the civic values important to good citizenship and describe in up to 750 words which civic value(s) are most important, and how civic value(s) can be incorporated in daily life. Last year, more than 31,000 essays were submitted, and 180 students and teachers were awarded cash prizes. The submission deadline is December 1, 2009.

OCLRE provides teachers professional development opportunities aligned with state social studies content standards. These programs are sponsored by the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Ohio Attorney General, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the ACLU of Ohio Foundation.
