Theme: Nurturing School Culture
Welcome back to the 2006-2007 school year. This is a year of new high expectations for your staff, your students, and yourself. The Principal’s Office hopes the year will hold all of the promises for you that you can dream and envision. We are kicking off the year with Standard 2 of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards, “A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.” In this month’s issue, we focus on the Political Landscape in a summary of an article that describes the efforts of the U.S. Department of Education to make the What Works Clearinghouse website more relevant and useful. The second summary encourages the thoughtful consideration of how well our nation’s high schools are preparing students with the skills necessary to participate in a global economy. The Story from the Field is a whimsical story that reminds us to have a backup plan even when we have carefully planned an event. Develop Your Staff offers ideas on how to bump your presentations up a notch with the use of technology. The editor’s pick for Professional Reading is a review of a book, Through Their Eyes: A Strategic Response to the National Achievement Gap by Kay Lovelace-Taylor. The Principal’s Office editorial board is gearing up for a year of interesting articles relevant to YOU and your work. Welcome back!
Contributor of the Month
Kay Lovelace Taylor is president of KLT & Associates and has held executive positions in two of the larger districts in the country, Detroit and Philadelphia. She also served as an associate professor for educational leadership and policy studies for the College of Education at Temple University in Philadelphia. Lovelace Taylor received a master’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Detroit and a doctorate in educational administration and curriculum development from Wayne State University.
