The Global Context of Schools
Consider a book study based on The World Is Flat by or another book about globalization. Devote a staff meeting to discussing how your current mission statement addresses the larger world context. Ask your staff to discuss in small groups the following questions:
- What do we currently do to prepare students for a global world?
- Which trend from The World Is Flat offers the greatest implication for what we do in school?
- Brainstorm some strategies for making your school more globally relevant.
Then come back together as a whole group and report out the ideas generated in small groups.
Consider doing the following:
- Revising your mission statement to infuse the global world concept
- Conducting a similar exercise at a parent meeting to consider how parents view infusion of globalization into their child’s schooling
- Bringing in outside resources to expose your students to the broader global context
- Incorporating world current events into the teaching and have students discuss implications for world understanding and peace
- Expanding your multicultural fairs to include a “Global Fusion” theme
