Crisis Plan
Make sure that everyone in your building is aware of the crisis plan as outlined by your district. Have sufficient practice so that everyone knows what is expected of him or her should a crisis arise. For example, determine who staffs the phones. Plan for staff members to carry their muted cell phones or walkie-talkies. Pose different scenarios on cards in a staff meeting and have small groups discuss “what if?” Have a core plan to follow, recognizing that it is impossible to plan for every contingency. The more you practice THINKING about contingencies, the more staff will feel comfortable thinking on their feet should an emergency arise.
