Collaborative Professional Development Process for School Leaders

Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium. (2004). Collaborative Professional Development Process for School Leaders. Washington, DC: Council of Chief State School Officers.

A related article highlights the Interstate Licensure document that laid out the six standards for school leaders upon which this professional development process is based: Read more >.

If you’d like to get started “working on the work,” this step-by-step guide will take you from goals to portfolio.

You can use the process alone, but speaking from my own experience, it’s better to work with colleagues.

Get a group of interested principals together, and use this handbook to work the steps outlined here:

  1. Analyze professional development needs, identify preliminary goals, and prepare a preliminary plan.
  2. Identify a professional development team.
  3. Convene the professional development team, establish norms and procedures for meetings, and present a preliminary professional development plan.
  4. Develop portfolio products and reflective commentary.
  5. Engage in continuous reflection, critical analysis of products relative to the professional development plan, and periodic reexamination of the plan.
  6. Prepare a summative reflection and self-evaluation leading to modifications in and revisions to the professional development plan.

Details appear in each chapter of the ISLLC standards, along with advice on issues likely to arise:

  • Whose team is this?
  • How large?
  • Within district/outside of district?
  • How often to meet?
  • How to stay on topic?

And my personal favorite:

  • How to help a school leader focus on professional development, and not fall into a management team mode?
