Panel on Civic Responsibility: Columbus, Ohio
by Beth Camp
Twenty-seven panel members from across the Columbus area, including four high school students, have been meeting once a month since January 2007 to take an interprofessional look at the complex issue of civic responsibility. Members from the professions of higher education, K-12 education, law, information technology, theology, and nursing are involved in this panel. The Interprofessional Commission of Ohio has recognized that educating a critical mass of people about the issue of civic responsibility is a feat that no single profession can accomplish on its own. By utilizing an interprofessional approach, the panel hopes to draw on the knowledge and resources of a wide variety of disciplines as it attempts to use a relevant interprofessional research base and a collaborative process to create a sustainable program. The program’s goal is to educate citizens and encourage the development of civic responsibility among youth and young adults in a local setting, and to be able to replicate the program in other communities and settings. Please look for updates about this very exciting endeavor in future editions of the Principal’s Office.
